YLT and he buildeth there an altar, and proclaimeth at the place the God of Bethel: for there had God been revealed unto him, in his fleeing from the face of his brother.

Crazy how good God is to us when we simply are not good. Jacob made a deal with his older, twin brother Esau when he was starving. Esau wanted stew Jacob cooked. Jacob told Esau to sell him his birthright. Esau claimed to be so hungry he was about to die and asked what use the birthright was to him. Jacob made sure Esau swore to it before giving him food. The Bible says Esau despised his birthright. Despised. Genesis 25:29-34 English Standard Version (ESV). Huh.

Tis mother, Rebekah, was aware of the deal. She helped Jacob cash in on the deal in a deceitful manner when their father Isaac was old, blind, and told Esau to get ready to be blessed. Genesis 27:5-17 ESV.

Esau clearly did not really mean it. Genesis 27:34, 36, & 41 ESV. Crazy how his hunger caused him to willingly trade something so important so callously. What has our hunger for sin caused us to forfeit and later regret? He wanted nothing do do with it when he was in one condition. But, when he came back to himself and it was time to receive all that was attached to it, it was too late. He had to deal with the consequences for the rest of his life.

Thing is though, in hindsight, it makes sense that this happened. They wrestled in her womb and she asked God what was up. He told her they were two nations and that the older will serve the younger. Jacob came out of Rebecca’s womb holding on to Esau’s heel. Genesis 25:22-26 ESV. Once Esau realized what happened and conversed with Isaac, Isaac said something similar to what God told Rebekah: you shall serve your brother. Buuuuuuut. Isaac said that when Esau grew restless, he would break Jacob’s yoke from his neck. Genesis 27:40 ESV.

A father looking out for a son who didn’t even really deserve it. The Bible doesn’t say whether or not Isaac was aware of the deal. It appears that he wasn’t. I doubt he would have just been okay with it had he known because he didn’t seem to pleased upon the discovery. But he made sure to speak to Esau and prophesy something good in the midst of a devastating moment that would alter the course of his future. Just like God does for some of us.
