MEANING: The LORD that Sanctifies You

Sanctification is a form of purification. It is a cleansing. God is a Holy and pure God. We have to be sanctified, purified, cleansed in order to be in right standing. It isn’t a one and done thing. It is continuous. Because we are sinners saved by grace. We are wrapped in flesh that is nothing good. The sacrifice of Jesus on the cross grants us access to be sanctified daily. Not occasional, regular intervals like the Old Testament

Exodus 31:13

KJ21 “Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, ‘Verily My Sabbaths ye shall keep; for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that ye may know that I am the Lord who doth sanctify you.

Lissssen. These are never gonna get posted if I keep waiting to read through and comment on all the different translations. 🤷🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️ I’m gonna read the Amplified and Message versions for the ones to follow and call it a day. 😊 Happy reading!

Pastor Tony Evans created a list of all the names of God and their pronunciations that can be found here. I broke each one down separately. However, I felt that it would be nice to have all of them in one place.

MEANING: God in Heaven

I don’t usually comment on the meaning before I get to the verses. But this. A God sitting above. Looking down on His creation. The care He has for us.

Joshua 2:11

KJ21 And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

The awe and submission this conveys. The worship. There is nothing left to say or do at times when we stand and recognize the place of prominence God has in our lives.

ASV And as soon as we had heard it, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more spirit in any man, because of you: for Jehovah your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath.

AMP When we heard it, our hearts melted [in despair], and a [fighting] spirit no longer remained in any man because of you; for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

I had to read this twice. Despair through me. But when one acknowledges their limitations in comparison to the vast greatness of God, despair is quite appropriate. And when you recognize the power of God, who it is fighting on your behalf? No fighting spirit is necessary.

AMPC When we heard it, our hearts melted, neither did spirit or courage remain any more in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

Heaven above AND earth beneath. A God of it ALL!

BRG And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the Lord your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

CSB When we heard this, we lost heart, and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.

CEB We heard this and our hearts turned to water. Because of you, people can no longer work up their courage. This is because the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.

CJB As soon as we heard it, our hearts failed us. Because of you, everyone is in a state of depression. For Adonai your God — he is God in heaven above and on the earth below.

CEV We know that the Lord your God rules heaven and earth, and we’ve lost our courage and our will to fight.

DARBY We heard [of it], and our heart melted, and there remained no more spirit in any man because of you; for Jehovah your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

DRA And hearing these things we were affrighted, and our heart fainted away, neither did there remain any spirit in us at your coming in: for the Lord your God he is God in heaven above, and in the earth beneath.

ERV When we heard about this, we were very afraid. And now, not one of our men is brave enough to fight you, because the Lord your God rules the heavens above and the earth below!

EHV We heard, and our hearts melted, and no one’s courage could hold up anymore against you, because the Lord your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.

ESV And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

ESVUK And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

EXB When we heard this, ·we were very frightened [L our hearts melted]. ·Now our men are afraid to fight you [L And there rose up no spirit/breath in a man because of you] because the Lord your God ·rules [L is God in] the heavens above and the earth below!

GNV And when we heard it, our hearts did faint, and there remained no more courage in any because of you: for the Lord your God, he is the God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

GW When we heard about it, we lost heart. There was no courage left in any of us because of you. The Lord your God is the God of heaven and earth.

GNT We were afraid as soon as we heard about it; we have all lost our courage because of you. The Lord your God is God in heaven above and here on earth.

HCSB When we heard this, we lost heart, and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.

ICB When we heard this, we became very frightened. Now our men are afraid to fight you. This is because the Lord your God rules the heavens above and the earth below!

ISV When we heard these reports, we all became terrified and discouraged because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath.

MEANING: The LORD my Shield

This makes me think about the armor of God in Ephesians 6. A shield was used to protect the vital organs in the chest. The Lord protects us. My goodness.

Deuteronomy 33:29

KJ21 Happy art thou, O Israel! Who is like unto thee, O people saved by the Lord, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! And thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee, and thou shalt tread upon their high places.”

MEANING: God who is near

Jeremiah 23:23

KJ21 “Am I a God at hand,” saith the Lord, “and not a God afar off?

Love the reassurance that God is close by. At hand reminds me of the instances in the Bible where the hand denotes power. So, to me, not only is He saying He’s close, but, this is a reminder of His power.

I got confused because the second half switched up and seems to say something different in different translations. But, I got it together after reading a few again. The children of Israel had been oppressed. They also turned away from God. God reminds Jeremiah that He is close. But, Jeremiah has honest conversations with God. It appears that God is telling him that He is close but He is far also and He sees what everybody is doing and what all is going on.

MSG “Am I not a God near at hand”—God’s Decree— “and not a God far off? Can anyone hide out in a corner where I can’t see him?” God’s Decree. “Am I not present everywhere, whether seen or unseen?” God’s Decree.

Pastor Tony Evans created a list of all the names of God and their pronunciations that can be found here. I broke each one down separately. However, I felt that it would be nice to have all of them in one place.

MSG You who sit down in the High God’s presence, spend the night in Shaddai’s shadow, Say this: “God, you’re my refuge. I trust in you and I’m safe!” That’s right—he rescues you from hidden traps, shields you from deadly hazards. His huge outstretched arms protect you— under them you’re perfectly safe; his arms fend off all harm. Fear nothing—not wild wolves in the night, not flying arrows in the day, Not disease that prowls through the darkness, not disaster that erupts at high noon. Even though others succumb all around, drop like flies right and left, no harm will even graze you. You’ll stand untouched, watch it all from a distance, watch the wicked turn into corpses. Yes, because God’s your refuge, the High God your very own home, Evil can’t get close to you, harm can’t get through the door. He ordered his angels to guard you wherever you go. If you stumble, they’ll catch you; their job is to keep you from falling. You’ll walk unharmed among lions and snakes, and kick young lions and serpents from the path.

I LOVE how this reads as an instruction. Someone who has experience is telling someone what to say and do.

NAME OF GOD: Jehovah Jireh

AMP So Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide. And it is said to this day, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be seen and provided.”

Lissen. Context. Abraham is OLD old. He had been waiting on Isaac for like 20 years. Sarah is old and finally had him after doubting. God told Abraham to offer Isaac as a sacrifice. AND HE DID IIIIIIIT! He was willing to lay a blade to the son God promised. He believed in and trusted God THAT much. God was like aht aht. Ok buddy. Look in the bush at the ram. Sacrifice that instead. The faith and fear that had to exist at the same time. The trust and utter shock of disbelief. I told someone recently that two things can be true at the same time. If this isn’t the depiction of that?!

AMPC So Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide. And it is said to this day, On the mount of the Lord it will be provided.

NAME OF GOD: Sar Shalom

MEANING: Prince of Peace

A prince denotes a son of a king who has authority by virtue of being the king’s son. The prince is one who is in line to ascend the throne and come into power. I know that this verse is Isaiah’s prophecy about Jesus. And peace. Tuh. His death at Calvary brought us everything we need. Peace is mentioned in multiple places in the New Testament. I can attest to Jesus being an authority of peace.

MEANING: The LORD Is with You

I mean. This is dang near just sending me. No matter what. No matter where we go. Like the Psalmist said in Psalm 139. What a comfort it is to have the Lord with us. It doesn’t always make things easier. But it DEFINITELY makes them bearable.

Judges 6:12

MEANING: O LORD Save

The author KNEW who to call in trouble!

Psalm 20:9

KJ21 Save us, Lord! Let the King hear us when we call.

ASV Save, Jehovah: Let the King answer us when we call.

AMP O Lord, save [the king]; May the King answer us in the day we call.

This confused me for a second. I had to read another version and then this one again for it to make sense. The two different uses of king tripped me up. The author, I would bet it is David, is asking the Lord save the king. Then, the author acknowledges the Lord as King. To me, is a statement of humility and understanding of one’s place in the hierarchy.

MEANING: The LORD the Judge

To me, this doesn’t mean He is looking and condemning. This means that He is going to bring justice to His people. I have changed up how I do this. I am gonna comment on the meaning and then read the Message and Amplified versions. It has been well over a year since I started this and there are so many still sitting.

Judges 11:27

KJ21 Therefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me. The Lord, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.”

ASV I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

AMP So I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong by making war against me; may the Lord, the [righteous] Judge, judge this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites.’”

My assumption sounds about right. It seems like there was conflict between these two groups. The Ammonites were clearly not dealing fairly with the Israelites. The person speaking seems like they had had enough and gave it over to the Lord to bring justice.

AMPC So I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong to war against me. The Lord, the [righteous] Judge, judge this day between the Israelites and the Ammonites.

BRG Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the Lord the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

CSB I have not sinned against you, but you are doing me wrong by fighting against me. Let the Lord who is the judge decide today between the Israelites and the Ammonites.”

CEB I haven’t sinned against you, but you’re doing me wrong by making war against me. Let the Lord, who is the judge, decide today between the Israelites and the Ammonites!”

CJB No, I have done you no wrong. But you are doing me wrong to war against me. May Adonai the Judge be judge today between the people of Isra’el and the people of ‘Amon.’”

CEV. I haven’t done anything to you, but it’s certainly wrong of you to start a war. I pray that the Lord will show whether Israel or Ammon is in the right.

DARBY So I have not sinned against thee, but it is thou who doest me wrong in making war against me. Jehovah, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon!

DRA Therefore I do not trespass against thee, but thou wrongest me by declaring an unjust war against me. The Lord be judge and decide this day between Israel and the children of Ammon.

ERV The Israelites have not sinned against you. But you are doing a very bad thing against them. May the Lord, the true Judge, decide whether the Israelites or the Ammonites are right.”

EHV As for me, I have not sinned against you. You are doing me wrong by waging war against me. Let the Lord, the Judge, render a verdict today between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon.

ESV I therefore have not sinned against you, and you do me wrong by making war on me. The Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon.”

ESVUK I therefore have not sinned against you, and you do me wrong by making war on me. The Lord, the Judge, decide this day between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon.”

JUB Therefore, I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me; let the LORD, who is the Judge, judge this day between the sons of Israel and the sons of Ammon.

KJV Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the Lord the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

TLB No, I have not sinned against you; rather, you have wronged me by coming to war against me; but Jehovah the Judge will soon show which of us is right—Israel or Ammon.”

MSG Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites with the message: “Jephthah’s word: Israel took no Moabite land and no Ammonite land. When they came up from Egypt, Israel went through the desert as far as the Red Sea, arriving at Kadesh. There Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom saying, ‘Let us pass through your land, please.’ But the king of Edom wouldn’t let them. Israel also requested permission from the king of Moab, but he wouldn’t let them cross either. They were stopped in their tracks at Kadesh. So they traveled across the desert and circled around the lands of Edom and Moab. They came out east of the land of Moab and set camp on the other side of the Arnon—they didn’t set foot in Moabite territory, for Arnon was the Moabite border. Israel then sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites at Heshbon the capital. Israel asked, ‘Let us pass, please, through your land on the way to our country.’ But Sihon didn’t trust Israel to cut across his land; he got his entire army together, set up camp at Jahaz, and fought Israel. But God, the God of Israel, gave Sihon and all his troops to Israel. Israel defeated them. Israel took all the Amorite land, all Amorite land from Arnon to the Jabbok and from the desert to the Jordan. It was God, the God of Israel, who pushed out the Amorites in favor of Israel; so who do you think you are to try to take it over? Why don’t you just be satisfied with what your god Chemosh gives you and we’ll settle for what God, our God, gives us? Do you think you’re going to come off better than Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab? Did he get anywhere in opposing Israel? Did he risk war? All this time—it’s been three hundred years now!—that Israel has lived in Heshbon and its villages, in Aroer and its villages, and in all the towns along the Arnon, why didn’t you try to snatch them away then? No, I haven’t wronged you. But this is an evil thing that you are doing to me by starting a fight. Today God the Judge will decide between the People of Israel and the people of Ammon.”

MEANING: God of my kindness, goodness and faithfulness.

Psalm 59:17

KJ21 Unto Thee, O my Strength, will I sing; for God is my defense, and the God of my mercy.

The author is worshiping and praising God. He identfies who God is, strength, defense and God of mercy. The author says they will sing. The chapter starts with the author asking to be delivered from their enemies. The author appears to be in trouble. What a comfort it is to know that we can go to God when we are in trouble. Even trouble of our own making. That’s what mercy is for.

ASV Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing praises: For God is my high tower, the God of my mercy.

High tower. Tall. Above other things.

AMP To You, O [God] my strength, I will sing praises; For God is my stronghold [my refuge, my protector, my high tower], the God who shows me [steadfast] lovingkindness.

Webster defines stronghold as a fortified place. A place that you can go during war that is built to protect you. My goodness. My refuge. A place to go and be safe. And then the God who shows (again according to Webster) firmly fixed in place, immovable lovingkindness. NO MATTER what I do and where I go, His lovingkindness is always there. That makes me wanna weep. But I’m a G and tears don’t come easy. Lol.

AMPC Unto You, O my Strength, I will sing praises; for God is my Defense, my Fortress, and High Tower, the God Who shows me mercy and steadfast love.

Fortress. SHOWS me mercy and steadfast love. Gives them to me. Is an example of them.

NAME OF GOD: Jehovah Elohim Tsaba

Pastor Tony Evans created a list of all the names of God and their pronunciations that can be found here. I broke each one down separately. However, I felt that it would be nice to have all of them in one place.

MEANING: LORD God of Hosts

Psalm 59:5

KJ21 Thou therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen; be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah

Well the author definitely wants God to judge.

ASV Even thou, O Jehovah God of hosts, the God of Israel, Arise to visit all the nations: Be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah

AMP You, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, Arise to punish all the nations; Spare no one and do not be merciful to any who treacherously plot evil. Selah.

Treacherously plot evil.

No mercy. Wicked traitor. Someone wasn’t doing right by God and or the author of this Psalm.

CJB For no fault of mine, they run and prepare. Awaken to help me, and see!

CEV Lord God All-Powerful, you are the God of Israel. Punish the other nations and don’t pity those terrible and rebellious people.

All powerful. The author clearly knows what God can do and what he is capable of.

DARBY Yea, do thou, Jehovah, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, arise to visit all the nations: be not gracious to any plotters of iniquity. Selah.

No grace for for plotters. Sheesh.

DRA Thou hast shewn thy people hard things; thou hast made us drink wine of sorrow.

ERV You are the Lord God All-Powerful, the God of Israel! Get up and punish them. Don’t show any mercy to those traitors. Selah

The author wants them taken care of.

Wake up.

ESV You, Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel. Rouse yourself to punish all the nations; spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah

Rouse yourself. It’s as if the author thinks Gox is not paying attention.

ESVUK You, Lord God of hosts, are God of Israel. Rouse yourself to punish all the nations; spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. Selah

EXB You are the Lord God ·All-Powerful [Almighty; of Heaven’s Armies; T of hosts], the God of Israel. ·Arise [L Awake] and ·punish [visit] ·those people [L all the nations]. Do not give those traitors any ·mercy [grace]. ·Selah [Interlude]

TLB (And O Jehovah, God of heaven’s armies, God of Israel, arise and punish the heathen nations surrounding us.) Do not spare these evil, treacherous men.

MSG Desperadoes have ganged up on me, they’re hiding in ambush for me. I did nothing to deserve this, God, crossed no one, wronged no one. All the same, they’re after me, determined to get me. Wake up and see for yourself! You’re God, God-of-Angel-Armies, Israel’s God! Get on the job and take care of these pagans, don’t be soft on these hard cases.

This makes me feel like what we may be guilty of at times. Coming across to God as if He is unaware and unmoved by our circumstances. Wanting Him to move quickly and on our timetable.

MEV You, O Lord God of Hosts, the God of Israel, awake to punish all the nations; do not be gracious to any wicked transgressors. Selah

Traitors.

Lord God of virtues. Give attention to punishing.

YLT And Thou, Jehovah, God of Hosts, God of Israel, Awake to inspect all the nations. Favour not any treacherous dealers of iniquity. Selah.

Inspect. Favour not. This author seems like they were going through and the people they trusted betrayed them. Rather than going after them, at least from what’s written, they seem to seek the vengeance of God. It reminds me of Romans 12:19 “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”
